Nearly one month old

Ok, I’ve made a decision. There will be no more moaning about my poor health or shoddy boobs for at least a week. It’s plain old boring, so those topics are officially off duty. Instead, I’ll tell you about Amelie who is nearly one month old. Where in the name of Jesus’ Auntie Nora did the time go?

In the last few days she has started looking around at things and really seeing them. She is intrigued by faces, our black & white Ikea cushion and the light fitting above the couch. She is also much more sensitive to sound which is unfortunate when you have a dog that barks every time a leaf falls in the garden.

Both B and my Mum reckon they’ve made her smile ‘socially’ but I remain unconvinced that these weren’t just coincidences. This is probably because it hasn’t happened to me yet. (Oh God, what if she doesn’t think I’m funny?!)

Her digestive issues are becoming a bit of a concern. (Here’s one for her TMI pile.) She is really struggling to poop. I don’t understand why this is happening because most of her feeds are still breastmilk which is supposed to be a laxative. I literally haven’t seen a golden nappy since 10pm last night (it’s now 4pm the next day). It seems that the only way to get things moving is for B to give her a vigorous tummy rub. He can literally massage the crap out of her. Much as I try, I haven’t had the same success, probably because I’m afraid of being too rough. I’ve only managed a couple of farts, and whilst every little helps, it’s not exactly cutting the mustard (let the puns begin).

Hopefully these problems are just a passing thing (look, another one!) and it will naturally resolve itself (oh dear). I saw in Tesco today that Aptamil make a special blend of formula that’s for constipation and colic so that may be worth a shot (I’m sorry, but that one’s weak, even for me). I’ll have to investigate it further and report back.

To end on a positive note, although she’s a bit clingy and whingey (because she’s going through a Wonder Week – more on that later), to have your child really look at you and see you (and then scowl) is pretty momentous. And it’s only going to get better.
